Haji Noor Deen has been nurturing a dedicated community of students in South Africa through the US based Deen Arts Foundation, that switched to online lessons when the pandemic disrupted face to face lessons. Earlier this year we had the good fortune of witnessing 2 of our South African students receive their ijazah certification in Arabic Calligraphy in the Chinese Style.
Haji Noor Deen’s deep affection for South African Muslims is reciprocated with equal warmth, as they find guidance in his teachings. Moreover, he is celebrated and supported by Muslim entrepreneurs and scholars around the country. The South African Muslim community, in particular, holds a special reverence for Islamic scholars, and their enthusiasm for learning is commendable. Together, they form a vibrant tapestry of faith, knowledge, and mutual respect.
With a lot of the first Muslims who arrived in Cape Town, hailing from Indonesia, Malaysia, and India, Cape Town Muslims have a history with Eastern Cultures. It is also worth noting that Cape Town’s oldest mosque proudly houses a remarkable collection of Indonesian transcriptions of the Qur’an.
Since there is a revival and growing interest in Arabic calligraphy in South Africa, we would like to use this opportunity to offer training in the writing of this script. This project will raise a generation of Mus’haf writers for many more generations, InshaAllah.
For this noble project, 38 dedicated students will be carefully-selected from across the country.
These students will be organised into two classes, each consisting of 19 individuals, and will receive comprehensive instruction and all course requirements as needed.
